The King's VS. the Pope's

Picture
The popes had the spiritual power and the kinds had the political power. They both controlled the European society. Popes were head of the church. People saw the pope as God's representation. Popes decided what the churches teached. If the pope thought that someone was working against the church, they could excommunicate - cast out from the church. Every "state" in the middle ages had a king. Some kings took control of countries.Europe's most powerful kings ruled England, France and Holy Roman Empire. Kings inherited the throne from their fathers.
What Happened
In the mid 1000's, a group of popes wanted to increase their authority over the Eastern Bishops. The Great Schism is reflected as the political and cultural divisions between the Orthodox and Catholic parts of Europe in today's world. Kings thought they could choose bishops, but popes said that they were the only ones who had the power of choosing religious parts. In 1703, Pope Gregory VII came to power and had problems with the bishop, Emperor Henry IV. The pope excommunicated Henry because he found out that he was working against the church. Later, Henry apologized to Gregory, and he let hi-m back into the church.
How it Led to End of Feudalism
I think that the kings vs. the popes helped leading to the end of Feudalism because the king lost a lot of power and most people started to support the Parliament and the popes so Feudalism was beginning to end.
